Its been (uuhmmm)…over two decades that I left Germany in pursuit of wealth and Fame (not really, I just wanted to spread my wings, see new things…really long story… Anyway, there are things a German chic will miss from time to time, things that are unique to German culture and food, and you will find them here.
Today I’m gonna introduce you to German Soup Pearls. They translate to Backerbsen (baked peas because that’s what they look like.) They are the type of food that sends a flashback into your brain and catapults you back into a childhood memory. These innocent looking crispy morsels of sheer baked deliciousness do just that.
I find myself in Austria with my family where we used to go skiing every winter. We’ve been on the slopes all morning, feet and hands are cold, cheeks are red from the frost and we finally stop in one of the little mountain Inns to warm up and have a bite to eat. Our treat was a rich delicious broth that probably simmered all day with bones, carrots, celeriac and leeks. In it, these beautiful golden pearls.
If you grew up on rice crispy cereal you know the sound I’m trying to describe. The pearls were crackling in the hot broth, soaking up its delicious flavor. This simple meal warmed the stomach and the soul and the satisfaction lasted way after leaving the Inn, hitting the slopes again and still having the flavor of the broth on your tongue. For a delicious treat in broth, creamy chicken soup, pea soup or just a handful as a snack, you can find them here.
