The classic club sandwich is a staple in American cooking and to be honest I never had one or and ordinary BLT for that matter. until I moved to this country. Its sad but true, BLT’s are not a thing in Germany.
I remember the first time I tried one, and I was sold, hello bacon. Yeah, bacon is a staple in my household. We love bacon, we raised bacon, we made bacon and boy can we eat bacon. My eleven year old will cook himself six strips of bacon if I let him. We add bacon chopped into scrambled eggs, into salads, mashed potatoes…darn now Im thinking about bacon. Soon there will be a whole week of bacon recipes.
So back to the BLTT. Some recipes use chicken some use turkey. We like turkey. Every time I buy buy chicken (oven roasted, smoked, it doesn’t matter) It ends up in the back of the fridge or as a chopped treat for Jasper and Tucker, mixed into their food.
Of course the bacon is pretty darn important on a club so don’t buy the cheap stuff. If you never tried Nuesskes wild cherrywood smoked bacon or the thick cut peppered bacon, you are missing out. Stop reading right now. Do yourself a favor, go to the store and get some.
However there is one bacon that will break that rule of cheap or no name brand. Once a year, if you are lucky and your store carries it, Aldi will sell a German style Black forest smoked bacon. Sorry Nuesske but that bacon is a tiebreaker…ok got bacon sidetracked again, back to the sandwich.
Yes, as much as I am not a fan of typical; “American bread” slash toast, for a club you need just that. Texas toast, three slices per sandwich. And last not least, lets talk quick about Mayo. Please, please, only real mayo, no miracle whip, no salad spread just good , real good mayo, in fact, if you didnt leave yet for the bacon, put dukes mayo on your list too. This is as close to homemade mayo as you can get, no added sugar, real egg yolks, yum.
Traditionally a club sanwich is served with pub chips or friends fires but I can almost garuantee you that you wont need any sides for this serious BLTT to fill you up. Of course you can divide this recipe in half for smaller portions or feed more people. You can add little bowls of mayo on the side or a ranch dip, spicy mayo or pestoDirections
